Before Confederation in 1867, Canadian vessels typically flew the British Red Ensign, which was the flag of the United Kingdom. This practice continued for several decades after Confederation.
In 1902, a new Canadian ensign was introduced, featuring the Union Jack in the canton (upper left corner) and the Canadian coat of arms in the fly (right side). This flag became the official ensign of Canada and was widely used by Canadian ships.
The Canadian Red Ensign served as Canada’s national flag until 1965. In that year, the Maple Leaf flag was adopted as Canada’s new national flag. This iconic flag features a red field with a white square centered on it, containing a red maple leaf. While the Maple Leaf flag became the national symbol, the Canadian Red Ensign continues to be flown by many Canadians, particularly those with a strong connection to the country’s maritime heritage.
