Shepherd History

The Shepherd Boat Company, founded in 1928 by Lloyd H. Shepherd and his son Howard in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, is renowned for its finely crafted mahogany boats that combined elegance with durability. In 1940, the company relocated to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, where it continued to produce high-quality wooden boats that gained popularity across North America during the 1950s .

Shepherd boats were known for their high freeboards and sturdy construction, making them well-suited for the rougher waters of the Great Lakes. The company was among the first to adopt V-drive technology in pleasure boats, allowing for more spacious interiors by positioning the engine near the transom.

In 1966, the Shepherd Boat Company was acquired by Trojan Yachts of Pennsylvania, a division of the Whittaker Corporation. As the industry shifted towards fiberglass construction, Shepherd began integrating fiberglass hulls with wooden decks and interiors. However, by 1978, the demand for wooden boats had declined, leading to the closure of the Shepherd factory.

In recent years, the legacy of Shepherd boats has been revived by the Bergersen Boat Company in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. After restoring a 27-foot Shepherd, the company acquired the rights to the Shepherd name and now produces new custom wood crafts that honor the original designs while incorporating modern amenities.

Today, Shepherd boats are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts for their classic design and craftsmanship. Restored models continue to grace lakes and waterways, serving as a testament to the enduring appeal of these iconic Canadian vessels.
