Hutchinson History

Hutchinson Boat Works, located in Alexandria Bay, New York, is one of the longest-operating boat building businesses on the St. Lawrence River. It was originally established as Hutchinson Brothers Boat Works around 1902 by George and James Herbert (Bert) Hutchinson.

The business started in rented facilities on Sisson Street and later moved to its current location on Crossmon Street in 1913.

The company gained a reputation for its craftsmanship and quality, constructing over 250 boats from 1902 to 1964.

They built a variety of boats, including houseboats, launches, racing boats, cruisers, runabouts, sedans, and utility boats.

During World War II, Hutchinson Boat Works transitioned to building military vessels, including 75-foot Yard Patrol (YP) training ships for the U.S. Navy.

After the war, they returned to building pleasure craft, producing notable boats like the world-famous runabout “Pardon Me” and the express cruiser “Gail IV”

The company continued building wooden boats until 1964, when they shifted focus due to the growing popularity of fiberglass boats.
