Garfield Arthur Wood, often known simply as Gar Wood, was a visionary entrepreneur and a pioneer in the world of powerboat racing. Born in 1880, Wood’s passion for speed and innovation led him to create a lasting legacy in the boating industry.
Wood’s journey began in the late 19th century when he started manufacturing boats in 1898. In 1911 he invented the hydraulic hoist for dump bodies which revolutionized the process of unloading materials form trucks. This funded his true passion in the realm of high-performance racing. In the 1920s and 1930s, Wood dominated the powerboat racing scene, setting numerous world speed records and winning prestigious competitions like the Gold Cup.
Gar Wood played a significant role in the development of the PT (Patrol Torpedo) boats used by the U.S. Navy during World War II. While he didn’t manufacture PT boats himself, his expertise in creating fast, maneuverable boats laid the groundwork for the PT boats’ design.
Gar Wood’s legacy extends far beyond his time. His contributions to powerboat racing, boat manufacturing, and naval technology continue to inspire and influence the boating industry today. The Gar Wood name is synonymous with speed, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence.
