Feather Craft boats were among the most distinctive aluminum runabouts of the postwar era. Founded in Atlanta, Georgia, by W. D. “Walter” Knight, Feather Craft began production in January 1946, using aircraft-style construction techniques and surplus aluminum made available after World War II. Their lightweight hulls were formed from heavy-gauge aluminum and assembled with thousands of exposed rivets, giving the boats their recognizable aviation-inspired appearance.
During the 1950s, Feather Craft produced fishing boats, racing hulls, utilities, and stylish family runabouts. Popular models included the Vagabond, Deluxe Runabout, Hawk, Rocket, and Ski-Bo. Their low weight allowed strong performance with relatively small outboard motors, making them economical and well suited for fishing, cruising, and water skiing.
Production expanded beyond Atlanta to Fort Erie, Ontario. Although original production ended around 1969, Feather Crafts remain collectible. Restored examples are often polished to a mirror-like finish and celebrated at antique and classic boat shows today.
