Buehler Turbocraft has an interesting history! The company was founded in 1959 by John Buehler, who was the president of Indiana Gearworks in Indianapolis. Buehler teamed up with Bill Hamilton from New Zealand, who had developed a unique water jet propulsion system. This collaboration led to the creation of the Marine Division of Indiana Gearworks, which was named Buehler Turbocraft.
The first model produced was a 16-foot boat powered by a six-cylinder Ford industrial engine. This innovative design allowed the boat to operate in very shallow water, which was a significant advantage. The company quickly gained popularity, especially after a successful expedition on the Colorado River in 1960.
Buehler Turbocraft became known for its style, performance, and innovation, attracting high-profile clients like Jackie Kennedy and even appearing in the James Bond movie “Thunderball”. The brand’s unique water jet propulsion system set it apart from traditional propeller-driven boats and contributed to its lasting legacy in the boating industry.
